When the SeaFrance Berlioz is brought into service in Spring 2005, SeaFrance will be the only ship owner operating two brand new ships between the world’s two largest passenger terminals.
The French company’s new ferry is being built in Saint-Nazaire by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, world specialist in the construction of cruise liners. She will be the sister ship of the SeaFrance Rodin which won the 2003/2004 award for the most innovative ferry.
The SeaFrance Berlioz has been specially designed for the Calais/Dover route which requires:
- Twenty manoeuvres a day
- Fast loading
- Embarkation of 700 cars or 120 trucks
With the introduction of this new ship, SeaFrance will offer its customers a well-regulated fleet and a guarantee of high-quality service.
Designed to carry 1,900 passengers in elegant, comfortable surroundings, the SeaFrance Berlioz has something for everybody.
After the SeaFrance Cézanne, SeaFrance Renoir, SeaFrance Manet and SeaFrance
Rodin, the SeaFrance Berlioz takes us into the world of music by paying homage
to the composer of the Symphonie Fantastique.
Hector Berlioz, 1803- 1869
Following on from SeaFrance's tradition of naming its ships after well-known
French artistes, the latest addition to the fleet is named after one of the
great French composers of the 19th century. Hector Berlioz is renowned for his
innovative operas, symphonies and other musical works including La Damnation
de Faust and Roméo et Juliette.
An original and passionate artist, Berlioz saw actress Harriet Smithson perform in a Shakespeare play in Paris and fell instantly in love with her. He poured out his unrequited feelings in an orchestral work, the influential Symphonie Fantastique. Five years later, the two were formally introduced at its London premiere, and later married. They had a son, Louis Berlioz, who became a sea captain.
Hector Berlioz was fascinated by literature and travel, touring Britain and the Continent on several occasions during his work as a conductor.

In the same year, SeaFrance Ltd. was established as a subsidiary responsible for the sales and marketing of the service in the UK as well as operations at the port of Dover.
SeaFrance is committed to the constant improvement of the quality of service it offers its customers whether car passengers, freight carriers, coach operators or foot passengers.
Quality: a daily concern: Responding effectively to the needs of its customers is a daily objective of SeaFrance. Each stage of the process (reservations, welcome at the ports and on board service) is periodically evaluated in order to make any improvements as swiftly as possible.
Safety and security are of paramount importance to SeaFrance and are a constant
preoccupation on board as well as on land.
As a ferry operator concerned with security and the respect of the environment
at sea, SeaFrance adheres to all the necessary maritime regulations (SOLAS,
MARPOL and STCW). SeaFrance is also ISM (International Safety Management) certified
which, for our customers, is a guarantee of our security standards and our commitment
to the protection of marine environment.
The cross-Channel route was established in 1841 in order to maintain the link
between the British and continental rail networks.
Wholly managed by SNCF until 1990, SeaFrance was launched with an entirely new
concept on 1 January 1996 following the end of the pooling agreement between
Sealink and SNAT. In the same year, SeaFrance Ltd. was established responsible
for the sales and marketing of the new service in the UK as well as port operations
in Dover.
SeaFrance has also extended its sales operation throughout Europe with representatives
in many countries including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy.
